Сейчас выражение stately home часто используется иронически по отношению ко многим прежде величественным домам аристократов, которые пришли в упадок из-за отсутствия средств. Это выражение было создано поэтессой Ф. Хеманс (1793—1835), одна из поэм которой начинается так:The stately homes of England How beautiful they stand! — Величественные дома Англии, Как красиво они стоят!
Эти слова были использованы в песне Н. Кауарда (1899—1973), популярного английского актёра, драматурга и композитора, подшучивавшего над английскими традициями, которые часто озадачивают иностранцев. -
